What’s an intellectual?

What is this creature? A bluestocking? Detached observer? Dreamer? Metaphysician? Dilettante?

“Intellect is the critical, creative and contemplative side of mind. Whereas intelligence seeks to grasp, manipulate, re-order, adjust, intellect examines, ponders, wonders, theorizes, criticizes, imagines,” wrote Richard Hofstadter.

“The actual definition of an intellectual must … include not only a certain type of thinking but also a relationship to socio-structural dissent, at least potentially,” wrote J. P. Nettl.

Someone who deals with analytical ideas is a theorist. Someone who deals with normative ideas is a moralist. Someone who deals with both is an intellectual.
